Rob & Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship
This is a call for applications for the Rob & Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship. All Science students who have an international research experience opportunity are welcome to apply. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students in gaining hands-on research experience in an international setting. For 2021 applications, the requirement for international travel is waived and/or may be extended to March 2022. Research collaborations must still be international in scope (e.g. collaborator is outside of Canada) to qualify.
Preference is given to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to knowledge translation through one of:
- A presentation at a departmental or research centre symposium or colloquium;
- Participation in a faculty/UVic presentation event, such as Honours Fest, Ideas Fest or JCURA; or
- A presentation at an external conference.
For full details (terms of reference and application form) please see the “Rob and Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship” tab on Science Awards website (https://www.uvic.ca/science/undergraduate/science-awards/index.php).
We look forward to receiving your application in the Dean’s Office by May 31, 2021.

Student Volunteer Opportunity – UVSS Peer Support Centre
The Peer Support Centre (PSC) is a safer space created to be an inclusive and comfortable space for students from all walks of life. It operates as a first point of contact for students looking for mental health support, referrals, and other resources. They typically operate through a face-to-face operations model out of the SUB; however, they have recently migrated to an online format in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
PSC student volunteers (from all faculties and programs) are highly trained in suicide prevention, active listening, cultural competencies, in order to offer non-judgmental, empathetic and confidential support to their peers.
The volunteer program is especially popular with psychology, sociology, and social work students as it is highly relevant to those wishing to pursue trauma centred careers; however, they have also had students from a variety of faculties (ie. Engineering and Fine Arts) bring great value to the team.
The PSC offers full training, volunteer support, reference letters, and professional development opportunities to our volunteers, which makes the organization an excellent choice for those pursuing next steps after graduation that require volunteer hours (ie. med school), but also creates a safe and welcoming space for those who find fulfillment through volunteering.
Details are as follows:
Who: Students of any faculty who are open-minded, empathetic, and would like to help their fellow students.
What: Peer Support — providing non-judgemental, confidential, and compassionate support to peers from all walks of life (training provided)
Where: Tentatively in person on the UVic campus, potential for hybrid or fully online shifts via Doxy telemed.
When: September 2021-April 2022 (negotiable and flexible). 2-4 hours a week (Centre hours are 12-5 PDT Monday through Wednesday; 6-10 Thursday and Friday)
Why: Fulfillment from helping your peers navigate difficult situations, full and robust mental health training, consistent volunteer hours, professional development opportunities, and reference letters.
If this volunteer opportunity is of interest to you, please see the attached application form and submit it to pscoperations@uvss.ca by end of day on Friday 26 March, 2021.
