UVic Libraries Science Communication Conference – March 17-18 (free)

University of Victoria (UVic) Libraries is hosting UVic’s first science communication initiative aimed towards post-secondary BIPOC students. The event will be held in a virtual setting from March  17-18, 2022, and is free to attend.

Interested students can register here. Registrations close on March 12th.  Preference is given to BIPOC students. Limited Spots. Apply today

The symposium with support from the NSERC Science Communication Skills (promo) Grant, is designed to equip post-secondary BIPOC students and early career scientists with critical science communication skills by leveraging the unique voices and lived experiences of BIPOC speakers in STEM disciplines. Through this symposium, we aim to provide attendees with networking and professional development opportunities to support their long-term goals in STEM.

The symposium will feature a keynote presentation from a distinguished STEM BIPOC leader, workshops on science through a story, opportunities in scicomm, a panel discussion on navigating current challenges in STEM, and a student research PITCH competition.

The symposium will offer the following benefits to the attendees:

  1. Learn about potential science communication opportunities in Canada,
  2. Networking opportunities to meet like-minded STEM leaders, listen to their STEM journeys and build lifetime mentors to support your STEM journey,
  3. Opportunity to participate in an elevator pitch competition, get expert feedback, and win exciting prizes.
  4. Exciting workshops that can help to initiate their own science communication journey

Chem EDI updated website

Based on your insightful feedback through the Equity Review (a huge thank you to those who participated), we now have a snazzy newly updated webpage for the Chem EDI committee: https://www.uvic.ca/science/chemistry/about/equity/index.php

On this page you can find information about our mandate (support, education and advocacy), how we can help if you have a concern related to EDI (advice and support to access UVic services), our timelines for response if you get in touch, and who is on the committee (including a short bio and why they joined the committee).

“Diving deep on the periodic table to find a treatment for cancer”

Alpha emitting radionuclides with medically relevant half-lives are interesting for treatment of tumors and other diseases because they deposit large amounts of energy close to the location of the radioisotope. Researchers at the Cyclotron Institute at Texas A&M University are developing a program to produce 211At, an alpha emitter with a 7.2 h half-life. The properties of 211At make it a great candidate for targeted alpha therapy for cancer due to its short half-life and decay mechanism. Astatine-211 has now been produced multiple times and novel chemistry has been developed for the separation of the At from the Bi target.
