“More than one million miles and possibly a century of life”

Modern lithium-ion batteries can power a vehicle more than a million miles and last many decades. I will explain some of the advances since 2016 which have made this possible. One might ask: “Why do we need such awesome Li-ion batteries since we will never drive our cars 1 million miles?” Governments have recognized the need for electric vehicles, but have not yet recognized the need for vast amounts of electrical energy storage in order to put more renewables on the grid. In 2030, 90% of all Li-ion batteries will be in vehicles. So we will need to use those batteries for energy storage in so-called “vehicle to grid” applications when they are parked, where they will rack up charge-discharge cycles even when they do not move.

Workshop – Search Smarter with CAS SciFinder-N

Live workshop!  Students welcome.

Tuesday February 15th 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Register here!

CAS SciFinder-n was developed to help scientists get to the most relevant information faster. In this session led by CAS trainer, Scott Hertzog, you’ll learn about some of the many features unique to CAS SciFinder-n  and become familiar with the functionality and content of this advanced scientific research solution.

Topics covered:

  • Concept filtering in literature searches
  • Simultaneous keyword and chemical structure searching
  • Saving, downloading, and sharing searches
  • Alerts – literature references, chemical compounds and more
  • PatentPak (chemical patent viewer)

Access SciFinder-n:

Note: Individual Registration is required for the web version of SciFinder. SciFinder’s web-based user registration form allows you to create your own SciFinder username and password. The registration process requires you use an email address ending in @uvic.ca After the form is complete, CAS sends an e-mail with the instructions for completing the registration process.

I look forward to seeing you at the workshop!

Well wishes,
Monique Grenier

Undergrad Research Awards – applications welcome!

Applications are being accepted for the following awards to support a research project in a Chemistry group during the Summer 2022, Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 term.  Interested students must secure a supervisor before formally applying.  Research interests and contact information of our faculty members can be found on our website.

NSERC USRA (Undergraduate Student Research Award)
This award provides $6,000 from NSERC plus a top-up of $3,500 from the research supervisor.  Information and the application form are found on the NSERC website.  A copy of your unofficial transcript should be included with the application.

SURA (Science Undergraduate Research Award)
This award provides $4,000 from the Faculty of Science plus a top-up of $4,000 from the research supervisor.  The terms of reference and application form are found on the Faculty of Science website.

SERA (Science Emerging Researcher Award)
This award provides $5,500 from the Faculty of Science plus a top-up of $3,500 from the research supervisor.  The terms of reference and application form are found on the Faculty of Science website.

A student may apply for more than one of the awards.

Completed applications forms must be submitted to dsecchem@uvic.ca by the deadline of February 28.
