Hosted by the York Centre for Asian Research: “Neo-Racism Against Chinese Scientists”

February 24, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Neo-racism Against Chinese Scientists: Consequences for the Scientific Enterprise in the US with a Discussion about the Situation in Canada

This presentation observes patterns of racial profiling, which we conceptualize as neo-racism, against scientists of Chinese descent in the United States. Following the US Department of Justice’s China Initiative, Chinese, Chinese American, and other Asian groups report far greater racial profiling from the US government, difficulty in obtaining research funds, professional challenges and fear and anxiety that they are being surveilled by the government, compared to non-Asians. This research confirms ways that neo-racism produces a “chilling effect” is taking place throughout the scientific community, particularly among those of Chinese descent, including US citizens.
