Could it be the FIRST word too?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Well, according to a 2009 study, the oldest words are, according to &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifehacker.com.au\/2018\/12\/these-are-the-oldest-words-in-the-english-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Today I Discovered The Oldest Words In The English Language<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>According to<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/research.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 2009 study by researchers at Reading University<\/a><\/strong>, the oldest words in the English language include &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>we<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>who<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>two<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>three<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, all of which date back tens of thousands of years. The discovery was made by tracking the divergence of ancestral words into different languages (including English) with an IBM supercomputer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2235 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/callmebog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2020\/05\/Rene-Descartes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"176\">And that makes SO much sense! Self awareness, consciousness, self-identity and the famous phrase from <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ren%C3%A9_Descartes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ren\u00e9 Descartes<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cogito,_ergo_sum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cogito, ergo sum<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; or as we know it better,<span style=\"color: #339966\"> &#8220;<strong>I think, therefore I am<\/strong>&#8220;<\/span>. And how wonderfully ironic that an IBM supercomputer was used too!<\/p>\n<p>And numbers too! I previously posted about &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/callmebog\/2020\/05\/06\/the-original-and-universal-language-of-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Original and Universal Language of Math<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; so that ties in quite well too!<\/p>\n<p>And from another favourite website,<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/s\/oldest-english-words\/#love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dictionary.com &#8211; The Oldest Words In The English Language<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, comes their roster of oldest words and it appeals to the poet in all of us!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>In an unrelated study, the linguistic boffins at <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/s\/oldest-english-words\/#love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dictionary.com<\/a><\/strong><\/span> revealed the oldest words in their online dictionary, although these only go back to 900AD or so. They include &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>love<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>black<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (which predates &#8220;white&#8221; by a significant margin), &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>mother<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>give<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>man\/woman<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>fire<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>hand<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>hear<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>pull<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>spit<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>worm<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;. Interestingly, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>old<\/strong><\/span>&#8221; itself is one of the oldest words in the English language. As Dictionary.com explains:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/callmebog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2020\/05\/old.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/callmebog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/219\/2020\/05\/old.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"107\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other authorities post similar results and go one step further, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/news-archive\/press-releases\/pr19825.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scientists discover oldest words in the English language and predict which ones are likely to disappear in the future<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; by predicting which words will become obsolete!<\/p>\n<p>Babbel is another great resource for language and word information, and they list their &#8216;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.babbel.com\/en\/magazine\/what-is-oldest-word-in-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oldest Words in The English Language<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8216; as well. All very similar and all fascinating in their reasons.<\/p>\n<p>And what happens AFTER the first word is used? LANGUAGES! A future post will discuss the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytranslations.com\/blog\/world-oldest-languages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oldest Languages in the World<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8216;!<\/p>\n<p>So, just think about it &#8230; every time you say a sentence such as, &#8220;I am going on a coffee break!&#8221;, &#8220;We should order pizza tonight!&#8221;, &#8220;Who wants to go to Tofino for two or three nights?&#8221; . . .&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong> you are using the oldest words in the English language<\/strong><\/span>! There was even a <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodhousekeeping.com\/life\/g25712934\/new-dictionary-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">40 New Words That Were Added to the Dictionary in 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.
