Title: Source Monitoring in Advice Taking

Abstract:

Source memory has been largely neglected in advice taking research despite being highly relevant for adaptive advice integration. My research fills this gap by showing how the source monitoring framework (Johnson et al., 1993) informs advice integration when people have to rely on remembered advice. By applying multinomial modeling to measure source memory independent of guessing, I investigated the moderating effect of source memory for different source dimensions of advisor credibility, such as advisor quality, on advice weighting. I find that with better source memory for advisor quality, people attach more weight to advice from high-quality advisors and less weight to advice from low-quality advisors. In a second line of research, I demonstrate substantial source monitoring differences between one’s own estimates and advice from others. People show a source memory advantage for their own estimates and show a source guessing tendency towards others. I discuss how these differences are relevant for advice taking and how the source monitoring literature informs theory development in advice taking.

The talk will be in person in the Psychology Reading room, COR A228, from 3:00 – 4:30.
