TED Fund Travel Awards (Open from Jan 10th to Feb 9th

An award is given to a continuing undergraduate student with a physical disability (or disabilities) for the enhancement of the student learning experience through travel, in support of research/creative activity and may include, but not be limited to, field schools, exhibitions, conferences or presentations.

The student’s disability (or disabilities) must be of a severity and degree to require a personal care worker to accompany the student when travelling. Preference is for students with a GPA of 6.0 or higher.

The online application will be open from January 10 until February 9th.

Students must submit:

  1. an essay of not less than 500 words and not more than 1000 words, outlining the educational benefits of travel, how travel will relate to the student’s studies, and what the student intends to learn from their travel;
  2. a letter of reference from a University of Victoria professor, demonstrating that the travel is related and beneficial to the student’s studies;
  3. a letter from a medical professional confirming that a personal care worker is needed to accompany the student when travelling; and
  4. a proposed budget for travel, including, but not limited to, estimated costs for travel, food, accommodation and accompaniment by a personal care worker. The student must provide ten percent (10%) of the approved budget.

Students enrolled for Summer Session (May to August) must apply via the online application in January; students enrolled for the Winter Session (September to April) must apply via the online application in April.

Mock Medical MMIs

Career Services is hosting Mock MMI (multiple mini interview) sessions to help students prepare for professional school interviews (medical, dental, physio, etc.).

Dates:
Jan 23 (PM) & Jan 24 (AM): Medical
Feb 21 (AM): Dental/Physio/Other

Sessions are online only and only for students with confirmed interviews.

For more info or to book, email careers@uvic.ca.

Background:

Many professional schools are now recruiting by using MMI multiple mini interviews).  Career Services are holding ‘mock MMI’ events to help prepare students for their interview by allowing them to circulate among stations ‘MMI’ style. Students will have the chance to practice addressing the kinds of questions that might be asked in the admission interview and the pace required to go from station to station.

Fish communication in a noisy and ever-changing underwater world

The diversity of biotic and abiotic sounds that fill marine ecosystems has become polluted by anthropogenic noise in recent decades. Yet, there is still uncertainty surrounding how different acoustic stimuli influence non-mammalian taxa and how changing ocean conditions may exacerbate the impacts of noise pollution. This constraint is due primarily to our limited understanding of how marine fish and invertebrates use sound to communicate and perceive environmental cues. This talk will cover ongoing efforts to address this disparity and integrate acoustics into the conservation of marine ecosystems. First, we will consider the geographic and taxonomic prevalence of soniferous (sound-producing) fish. We will then examine how vessel noise has transformed soundscapes throughout the North Pacific and quantify the ecological impacts of this pollutant. Finally, we’ll consider the hypothesis that habitat-mediated soundscape conservation – the ability of biogenic habitats to attenuate noise – plays an unrecognized role in mitigating the impacts of noise pollution in marine ecosystems. These projects draw on data science, field experiments, and ecological theory. The importance of this research is magnified given the absence of federal underwater noise regulations, the pending development of Canada’s Ocean Noise Strategy, and multiple nations seeking to balance industrial activities with environmental stewardship.
