Are you an international student preparing for your co-op/internship/practicum experiencing and looking for guidance on completing your IRCC application?
The International Centre for Students will host in-person Co-op/internship/practicum Work Permit Application Drop-in Hours to provide one-on-one assistance. Refer to the links below for detailed information about these drop-in sessions on co-op work permit assistance:
Get Work-Ready: Co-op Work Permit Application Assistance
- February 10: 11:00am to 12:30pm (PT)
- February 11: 11:30am to 1:00pm (PT)
No registration is required! These in-person drop-in sessions offer one-on-one assistance on a first-come, first-served basis. To make the most of your time, review the recording and presentation slides from our previous session on the Working in Canada webpage, where you’ll find helpful tips and resources to get started. When you come, please bring:
- Your laptop and UVic OneCard
- Required application forms and documents (digital or hard copy)
- Any questions you have!

Ocean of Data Challenge: Telling Ocean Stories
The Ocean of Data Challenge: Telling Ocean Stories, is a national competition focused on science communication and ocean data storytelling.
Running from February 6–24, 2025, this free challenge gives students the chance to transform real ocean data from Ocean Networks Canada into engaging, meaningful stories that make science more accessible.
Hosted by DeepSense, COVE, and ShiftKey Labs, this exciting challenge is open to current students (full-time or part-time) and recent graduates (within the past 12 months) of a Canadian post-secondary institution. The challenge kicks off virtually on February 6th at 6:00 pm AST with an introduction to the challenge, expert presentation, and a Q&A session.
Final submissions are due by February 24th, with winners announced on March 12th.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Open to students from all fields, not just computer science! Creativity and diverse perspectives are encouraged.
- Hands-on Experience – A unique opportunity to explore ocean data and develop impactful storytelling skills.
- Cash Prizes – Four prizes totalling more than $1800 will be awarded to the winners.
- Flexible Participation – Students can compete individually or in teams of up to five, working at their own pace over the challenge period.
This challenge is a great way to develop science communication skills, gain hands-on experience with ocean data, and explore interdisciplinary collaboration.
