CRA Tax Information Session for International Students

Are you an international student wondering whether, or how, you should file a Canadian income tax return? Join us for an income tax information session, where a representative from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will provide an overview on the Canadian income tax system. They will go over tips for filing income taxes, review applicable benefits and credits, and share other important tax information for international students.

We strongly encourage students to review information on the CRA website and the ICS website prior to attending the event.

BC MSP Application Drop-in – ICS

Attention International Student:

BC MSP Application Drop-in

Mondays | 1:30-2:30 pm

Have you applied for BC MSP? International students planning to stay in BC for 2 terms or more must apply for primary health insurance through the BC Medical Services Plan. If you haven’t yet applied, or have any questions about your coverage, drop in any Monday from 1:30 – 2:30 pm at the International Centre for Students (Jamie Cassels Centre office B202D).

Registration is not required.

What to expect during the BC MSP Drop-in? ICS Settlement Advisers will share information on the BC Medical Service Plan, guide students in completing the BC MSP application, and answer any student questions.

If you plan to apply, please bring a laptop or tablet, a scanned copy of your study permit, and your address in Victoria.

Trent University Forensic Science Graduate Program – Virtual Information Session

TED Fund Travel Awards (Open from Jan 10th to Feb 9th

An award is given to a continuing undergraduate student with a physical disability (or disabilities) for the enhancement of the student learning experience through travel, in support of research/creative activity and may include, but not be limited to, field schools, exhibitions, conferences or presentations.

The student’s disability (or disabilities) must be of a severity and degree to require a personal care worker to accompany the student when travelling. Preference is for students with a GPA of 6.0 or higher.

The online application will be open from January 10 until February 9th.

Students must submit:

  1. an essay of not less than 500 words and not more than 1000 words, outlining the educational benefits of travel, how travel will relate to the student’s studies, and what the student intends to learn from their travel;
  2. a letter of reference from a University of Victoria professor, demonstrating that the travel is related and beneficial to the student’s studies;
  3. a letter from a medical professional confirming that a personal care worker is needed to accompany the student when travelling; and
  4. a proposed budget for travel, including, but not limited to, estimated costs for travel, food, accommodation and accompaniment by a personal care worker. The student must provide ten percent (10%) of the approved budget.

Students enrolled for Summer Session (May to August) must apply via the online application in January; students enrolled for the Winter Session (September to April) must apply via the online application in April.

Mock Medical MMIs

Career Services is hosting Mock MMI (multiple mini interview) sessions to help students prepare for professional school interviews (medical, dental, physio, etc.).

Dates:
Jan 23 (PM) & Jan 24 (AM): Medical
Feb 21 (AM): Dental/Physio/Other

Sessions are online only and only for students with confirmed interviews.

Background:

Many professional schools are now recruiting by using MMI multiple mini interviews).  Career Services are holding ‘mock MMI’ events to help prepare students for their interview by allowing them to circulate among stations ‘MMI’ style. Students will have the chance to practice addressing the kinds of questions that might be asked in the admission interview and the pace required to go from station to station.
