The Martlet, UVic’s independent newspaper, is now accepting pitches for a special issue focussed on the climate crisis. We’re looking for pitches for all sections of the paper (news, opinion, lifestyle, sports, culture, and humour) and spanning all aspects of the topic.

Students, do you have an academic paper or assignment that you wrote about (or related to) the climate crisis? The Martlet can help you turn it into a story for publication. Passionate about the topic, but not familiar with journalism writing? We can help you with that too.

Pitches are due to edit@martlet.ca by Nov. 4 and stories are due on Nov. 15. If you have questions about contributing to the climate issue, please contact Isabella at edit@martlet.ca.

What should a pitch include?

• A proposed headline and proposed wordcount.
• Basic info about the story (ex. where it takes place, who is involved, what the main crux or thesis is, which section you think the story is a good fit for).
• The angle or perspective you plan to take when writing this story.
• Why you feel this story is important.
• Is there a local connection to the story?
• How will you get more information to build your story? (ex. research, interviews).

Volunteer with the UVic Global Community! The UVic Global Community is looking for Undergraduate and Graduate Conversation Partners and Mentors for the 2022-2023 Academic Year (September 2022 – April 2023) who want to help build an inclusive, globally-minded campus and support international students with their social and academic transition to UVic. Global Community Volunteers are matched with up to three students and meet with their student(s) for a minimum of 1 hour every week throughout the term to encourage students to get involved in the UVic community and build confidence in conversational English, all while making connections with people from around the world. CUCOH is a three-day student-run conference at Queen’s University. It is the largest student-run health conference in Canada. CUCOH exposes undergraduate students to a wide array of professions in the healthcare industry through inspiring keynotes, engaging case challenges, interactive workshops and a research competition that showcases the multidisciplinary nature of healthcare. This year, the conference is focused on delivering a holistic, environmentally friendly, and inclusive experience for all delegates in an in-person setting.

In order to effectively promote our conference to different Canadian and American Universities, we seek to hire external ambassadors to help. An external ambassador’s role is to raise awareness for CUCOH on their own campus, and bring in delegates for the conference. This is a volunteer position, however it does come with the added benefit of $5 off their own registration fee for the conference per each delegate recruited (up to a maximum of $75 off). We accept external ambassadors on a rolling basis.

CUCOH presents an unparalleled opportunity for students studying the sciences to receive a cohesive overview of the current state of Canadian healthcare and explore specific areas of future change. We hope that you would be interested in sending an email announcement to the students in your faculty to help us in our efforts to broaden the scope of this year’s conference!
