Dear Students,
You are invited to participate in a study titled “Developing an open toolkit for inclusive pedagogy in library instruction and consultation” that is being conducted by Aditi Gupta, Engineering and Science Librarian (PI), Ying Liu, Asian Studies Librarian, Tad Suzuki, Fine Arts and Humanities Librarian and Dr. Tsung-Cheng Lin, Faculty, Department of Pacific & Asian Studies at the University of Victoria.
The purpose of this research project is to provide librarians and library staff with a suite of comprehensive resources that instill anti-racist pedagogical practices and develop cultural competency skills.
We are conducting focus groups of library staff, faculty, and students to identify, review, and assess existing programs and practices involving diverse student populations. Your participation in this research is valuable and will help the librarians gain feedback on current practices that can create barriers for library users and to learn about current library instruction practices that might need to undergo changes.
We ask that you please contribute 75-90 minutes of your time to help us gather input and work toward our goals. As a way to compensate you for any inconvenience related to your participation, you will be given one of 12 gift cards valued at $20 each for time spent in the focus group interviews.
Please fill out the following screening questionnaire to determine your eligibility for this study: https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/YMXV6P8 by June 1, 2022.
The focus group will take place on June 6, 2022 from 10:00am-11:30am. You will have an opportunity to read and provide consent to the study before the focus group activities begin.
Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. If you do decide to participate, you may withdraw at any time without any consequences or any explanation. Your responses will be held in strict confidence. No identifying information will be retained.
If you have further questions by email, you can contact Aditi Gupta at aditig@uvic.ca or Ying Liu at yingliu@uvic.ca
Thank you in advance for your participation and for taking this opportunity to assist us in our study.

The Biology EDI Committee is pleased to be able to offer our first internal EDI workshop. We invite all faculty, department and research staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, and biology undergraduates to join us in welcoming Yahlnaaw, EQHR Indigenous Rights and Anti-Racism Officer. Please share this invite with anyone not on the biology distribution lists.
In this workshop, you can expect to hear about important equity-seeking topics and be able to contribute to a discussion surrounding EDI. The discussion portion of the workshop will invite you to ask the tough questions (for example, how might I decolonize my biology course curriculum? How is this related to my biology course?).
We hope you will join us Thursday, May 5, 1:00 – 3:30 PM on Zoom.
To register, please contact biology.edi@uvic.ca.
