The UVic Women in Science Peer Mentorship Program’s overarching goal is to foster genuine connections amongst students, supporting their growth, and we’re gearing up for an exciting fall session.
We have officially opened applications for our Fall mentorship program. This is a call to students at all stages—from eager undergraduates to seasoned graduate students. Undergrads, regardless of year, and first or second-year grad students can join as mentees, while upper-year undergrads and all grad students can offer their insights as mentors. Our goal is simple: to pair individuals who can grow and learn from each other, enriching their academic and personal journeys.
Our program focuses on supporting women in science, but it is open to all students at UVic. It’s a great opportunity to seek or offer guidance and make meaningful connections that last beyond our campus.

I’m reaching out to you all today on behalf of the Society for Students with a Disability (SSD) about our campaign “Access4All.” Access4All is a campaign started by UVic students who see the potential of hybrid and online learning and saw that the university has the capacity to provide these formats since coming through the pandemic-induced lockdown. Accessible learning methods and materials are necessary for equitable access to higher education, and hybrid/online course material is paramount. You can find out more about this campaign on the SSD website, here.
The next step in our campaign is learning what students are looking for from their classes as well as what the barriers and concerns are in providing accessible education from staff and professors. We would greatly appreciate it if you would circulate our survey to your students and faculty as well as any other interested parties. The average response time has been 20min although we hope it will take less. The Ocean Conservation Lab is looking for an upper year biology student with an interest in deep-sea biodiversity for an exciting Directed Studies project for Fall 2024. Come join us in describing a newly discovered habitat on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge!
Supervised by Dr. Amanda Bates, with help from Dr. Joan Alfaro (Post-doctoral Researcher) and Lindsay Clark (Ph.D. Candidate), the project’s main components include describing the seafloor community of a newly discovered sponge garden, investigating how the benthic community changes with depth, and compiling a photo catalog of species. In response to international students’ immigration needs, the International Centre for Students (ICS) offers daily immigration drop-in hours. Effective Monday, August 19, 2024, our immigration drop-in hours will be offered from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Students meet with an International Student Adviser (ISA) on a first-come, first-served basis via Microsoft Teams, phone or in person.

Rene Savenye Scholarship
This scholarship for $2000 is awarded to a post-secondary student enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited BC institution. Programs should relate to awareness, appreciation, and understanding of our natural environment. The scholarship is intended to support research projects involving species and habitat conservation, rehabilitation of disturbed sites or developing educational materials about nature and conservation.
The scholarship honours Rene Savenye, naturalist and mentor. Rene was an enthusiastic contributor to numerous clubs: the North Shore Hikers, Vancouver Natural History Society, Valley Outdoor Club, White Rock and Surrey Naturalists, Surrey Green Timbers Forest advisory committee and the Geological Survey of Canada. Rene mentored several organizations at their start-up and was always quick to volunteer to lead a nature walk in the community. He was the consummate teacher, exhibiting uncommon patience and enthusiasm while explaining the marvels of nature.

Most students learn about our program from advisors, alumni, friends, or faculty. We ask for your help to: distribute the course schedule and website to students during advising sessions, announce this opportunity at staff meetings, circulate information to internal student mailing lists, and inform relevant student clubs.
Since 1899, Flathead Lake Biological Station of the University of Montana has offered immersive summer field ecology courses with aquatic and terrestrial focuses. Our summer academic program emphasizes experiential learning through direct field research methods and interactions with natural resource professionals. Indeed, 2024 will be a special year for FLBS as we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary!
These rigorous courses reliably transfer to other colleges and universities. Students benefit from low student-faculty ratio, great facilities, a dedicated support staff, and lessons that engage with multidisciplinary research projects and applications. Courses take spectacular field outings and overnight trips throughout the Flathead Watershed including Glacier National Park. Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships as, each year, a large number of applicants receive scholarships to help fund their enrolment at the Bio Station.
