Health and Regenerative Medicine Hackathon

Hello Students,

Registration is now open for the 2019 Health and Regenerative Medicine Hackathon!

You may have heard of hackathons for programmers and software engineers but what is a Health Hackathon? The Health Hackathon is a competition event where teams will work for 24-hours to solve a variety of challenges being faced in our community. Whether it’s a problem in the clinic or on the lab bench, each challenge has been submitted by someone involved in BC healthcare or medical research and they span a variety of disciplines in engineering and science. The goal at the end of the competition is to have a usable solution that can be implemented.

Students at all levels and from all disciplines are welcome. There is no prerequisite knowledge or experience required!

Why should you attend the Health Hackathon?:

  • You enjoy problem solving and want to apply it to improve your community
  • You want to learn about new innovations in healthcare
  • Looks great on a resume especially when applying for co-ops
  • Free food and cash prizes!

Curious about the Health Hackathon? Come to our kick-off event on September 6th (ECS660 – 6-8pm) to learn about the challenges, learn about the resources available for completing the challenges and make teams. Teams will have a month after the kick-off to plan/prepare for the Hackathon.

Event details:

  • Kick-off: September 6th, 2019 – Engineering and Computer Science Building, Room 660, UVic – 6pm
  • 24-hour Hackathon: October 4th-5th, 2019 – Fort Tectoria, 777 Fort Street – 6pm (Oct4) to 6pm (Oct5)

STEM Fellowship Journal

STEM Fellowship is a Canadian, youth-led, non-profit organization that creates mentorship and experiential learning programs to equip students with skills in data analytics, research, and scholarly communication. STEM Fellowship Journal (SFJ) is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal published by Canadian Science Publishing. The SFJ is dedicated to showcasing research from first-time high school and undergraduate authors.

We are now calling all young scientists to submit their interdisciplinary STEM research papers, including original research articles, viewpoints, and review articles that detail inconclusive results, to celebrate our belief that failures are the basis of scientific understanding. As such, the theme of this call is Inconclusive Results. SFJ believes that researchers need to communicate their inconclusive findings in order to logically direct future research initiatives. More information can be found here. The deadline is on July 15, 2019.

We are also proud to announce the latest release of our STEM Fellowship Journal (Volume 4, Issue 1). The issue hosts a wide range of original investigations done by young STEM researchers. This issue includes research on the predictors of HPV vaccination completion; how Tigecycline demonstrates anticancer activity; and how milk can be made less allergenic. In addition, this issue showcases the proceedings of the Indicium and unERD (Undergraduate Engineering Research Day) conferences. The PDF of the issue can be found here.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require any further information.

STEM Fellowship is recruiting students

STEM Fellowship, a national, youth-led, not-for-profit organization that creates mentorship and experiential learning programs to equip students with skills in data analytics, research, and scholarly communication is recruiting students for roles on several committees on their national team.

The open positions can offer new recruits the opportunity to design and implement novel marketing strategies, collaborate with the partners of our STEM Fellowship Journal (including Youth Science Canada and Canadian Science Publishing), organize our annual scholarly writing competition or coordinate programs to reduce inequities in STEM fields. New recruits will also contribute to the development and expansion of the programs, such as the STEM Fellowship Journal (an open-access peer-reviewed journal supported by Canadian Science Publishing), the Big Data Challenge (which combines elements of global citizenship education and social entrepreneurship with big data analytics and research skills) and STEMpowerment (which provides research and mentorship opportunities for students from communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM).

The call for applications can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OEXVYQ5h03v3CXMPWD31N7rnVmrexh-CRrwfzXHhxDI/

The deadline for applications is June 1, 2019.
