STEM Research Symposium Nov 28 in MSB 160

The UVic Women in Science (WIS) initiative is to foster a supportive and engaging environment to establish a network for women who are currently involved or interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. We are hosting our third annual STEM Research Symposium on November 28th in the Medical Sciences Bldg, Rm 160. This symposium aims to connect females from different areas of research at UVic and within the community in an effort to highlight their contributions to these fields. During this event we will host a poster session accompanied by short oral presentations given by graduate and undergraduate students. This event will also feature keynote presentations and panel discussions composed of women from diverse fields and stages of their careers. Graduate and undergraduate students involved in research are encouraged to present either a pecha kucha style oral or poster presentation on their current research. Distinguished Women Scholars Lecture – Dr. Caroline Colijn, October 25

Dr. Caroline Colijn, Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematics at SFU is coming to UVic as part of the Provost’s Distinguished Women Scholars Lecture series.  The organizers are hosting  a student luncheon with Dr. Caroline Colijn, Friday October 25, 2019, HHB 128 (Learning and Teaching Centre).

Dr. Colijn’s research is at the interface of mathematics and epidemiology and the evolution of pathogens. In a casual setting, students will be able to ask Dr. Colijn about her career path in Math/Biology. Undergraduate and graduate students are all welcome.

Invitation to Participate in the AVP Academic Planning Search Process

Dear Students,

On behalf of the Search Committee for the Associate Vice-President Academic Planning (“the Committee”), I am writing to inform you of the next steps in the search process. The Committee has crafted a position profile in consultation with constituency groups, completed six long list video-conference interviews, and, selected three candidates to participate in site visits over the coming weeks. The site visits are scheduled to take place on:

Candidate A: September 26-27

Candidate B: September 30-October 1

Candidate C: October 3-4

During the site visits, the three short-listed Candidates have been asked to do a public presentation on the following question:

How do you see the role of AVP Academic Planning contributing to the Strategic Framework of the University? What do you see as some of the future opportunities for the role and UVic?

The presentations have been scheduled at the following times and dates:

Candidate A: September 26, 12:00 pm – 12:50 pm in Medical Sciences Building (MSB) 160

Candidate B: September 30, 1:00 pm – 1:50 pm in University Club Salal Room

Candidate C: October 3, 12:15 pm – 1:05 pm in Medical Sciences Building (MSB) 160

The Committee encourages all members of the campus community to attend the public presentations and provide feedback to the Committee. We acknowledge that September 30th is Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the first of the Jewish High Holy Days. All presentations will be recorded and uploaded to the VPAC site for those who are unable to attend in person. You will also find the finalized position profile on the VPAC site (https://www.uvic.ca/opportunities/leadership/current/avpap-2019.php), and CVs for each candidate will be uploaded a few days prior to each scheduled site visit. Community Gathering

Community Gathering

A community gathering for reflection and support will be held at the University of Victoria on Tuesday, Sept. 17 to provide students, faculty and staff with a space to unite and reflect in the wake of the recent bus accident in which two students died and several were injured. Everyone is welcome to attend the event organized by UVic in collaboration with University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS). The event will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at BiblioCafé, on the ground floor of the Mearns Centre for Learning (McPherson Library), with brief remarks from university and UVSS leaders. UVic support staff will be present to assist members of UVic’s community. This venue is in the heart of campus, yet there is limited space so please arrive on time.
