Exchange opportunity University of Washington for 2021-22
Dear Students,
Are you interested in an incredible Exchange opportunity to the University of Washington for the 2021-22 academic year?
The University of Washington is offering a scholarship of $12,000 for one UVic student to participate in a year-long exchange (UVic Winter Session 2021-22). The Corbett British Columbia-Washington Exchange Program helps students from UW, UVic, and UBC build an understanding and appreciation for the relationship between the United States and Canada, and the unique shared values of the Pacific Northwest region. The successful applicant would participate in this program as a student in the International Student Services (ISS) Exchange Program.
Information Session: We will be hosting an information session via Zoom this Friday (January 22nd) at 12:30pm. If you are interested in this scholarship, please feel free to attend. Zoom Link: https://uvic.zoom.us/j/89696695097?pwd=MUhBTCtFeEc4c0JtVU1BY0lERmZxQT09

COVID-19 Information:
- We cannot predict what the 2021-22 academic year will look like. While we are unsure about the possibility of in-person exchanges at this time, we are still moving forward with applications. But, if travel restrictions are in-place in the fall, UW will be offering a Virtual Exchange Scholarship option, with a smaller scholarship amount.
If you are interested in the scholarship and going to the University of Washington for the 2021-22 academic year as part of the ISS Exchange Program, please try to come to the information session this Friday. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email the ISS Exchange Team at goglobal@uvic.ca

PEEC – February 18-19, 2021
Hello students of Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest!
It’s that time of year again, but this year is a bit different! The 42nd Annual Pacific Ecology and Evolution Conference (PEEC) is going virtual this year and we are now accepting registration and abstracts! Registration for this year’s conference is free and takes place in the comfort of your own home so there is no reason not to attend! This conference is organized and run by graduate students for early career scientists, and is an amazing opportunity to share your work, get valuable feedback from peers, and network with other students in your field in a supportive and casual environment.
We invite students addressing ecological and evolutionary questions across a range of backgrounds and study systems to present their work in either a 12-minute presentation, a 3- minute condensed talk, or a poster. However, presenting is not mandatory: simply attending and helping this think tank by listening and asking questions is also encouraged! Indeed, by bringing people from different labs, departments, and universities together, PEEC creates a melting pot of scientific thoughts and innovations, and an opportunity to network outside your school and research group. Talks will primarily take place in the afternoon of each day and we will be announcing workshops to be held in the mornings in the near future.
This 42nd edition of PEEC will be happening on February 18-19, 2021 – so start planning now! The conference is free of charge, our costs are covered thanks to our generous sponsors (see list on our website). Registration is now open and will close on January 29th. All talks will be pre-recorded and will be due one week before the conference, we will provide more information including instructions on how to record your talk by email to registrants. The registration form and other information about the conference can be accessed via our website https://peec2021.wordpress.com or at the link below. Details can be found on the registration form here:

Science in Society Club – January 13 and 14
We are writing on behalf of the new Science in Society Club at UVic. Our goal is to to promote, practice, and spread the importance of soft skills in science. From effective writing for a lay audience, to oral presentations and ethical decision making, we want to introduce undervalued skills to students early on in their academic careers. We are hoping to extend our reach to students from diverse faculties with the hopes of making strong interdisciplinary connections.
Thank you kindly in advance,
