What is the Rob and Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship?
The Rob and Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship was established by Rob Lipson, Dean of the Faculty of Science (2010-2019) and his wife, Tammy Lipson. Through this scholarship they want to help more students gain hands-on research experience in an international setting.
Who is eligible for an award?
All Science students who have an international research experience opportunity are welcome to apply. Preference is given to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to knowledge translation through one of:
a) A presentation at a departmental or research centre symposium or colloquium;
b) Participation in a faculty/UVic presentation event, such as Honours Fest, IdeaFest or JCURA; or
c) A presentation at an external conference.
To be eligible for a Rob and Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship a student at the time of application must:
Undergraduate Students:
Be registered as a full-time student (12 units or higher) for a bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria in the current Winter
Session (September-April)
Intend to continue in full-time undergraduate studies in the next Winter Session (September-April)
Have a cumulative GPA of 6.0 or higher for all courses completed at the time of application
Graduate Students:
Be registered as a full-time student (3.0 units or higher) for a master’s degree or doctoral program
Have a cumulative GPA of 7.0 or higher for all courses completed at the time of application
Value of awards
One or more scholarships valued between $2,000 and $4,000 are awarded annually.
How are students selected for the award?
Applications will be adjudicated by the Teaching Advisory Committee of the Faculty of Science. Students will be evaluated based on academic excellence (50%) and the strength of the collaborative research opportunity (50%). Previous winners and new applicants will be assessed equally.
