News from BMSC Student Ambassador

>Oyez Oyez Good People,

>Winter is coming for the long-awaited, yearly Pacific Ecology and Evolution

>Conference (PEEC)! It is a conference run and organized by graduate students for early career

>scientists and is an amazing opportunity to get valuable feedback from peers, which will surely be

>enhanced by the scenery of beautiful Bamfield, BC. We invite students addressing ecological

>and evolutionary questions across a range of backgrounds and study systems to present

>their work in either a 12-minute presentation, a 3-minute condensed talk, or a poster.

>However presenting is not mandatory, and so attending and helping this think tank by listening

>and asking questions is also encouraged! Indeed, by bringing people from different labs,

>departments, and universities together, PEEC creates a melting pot of scientific thoughts and

>innovations.

>In today’s world, the way we communicate science is constantly changing. While

>information travels faster than ever before, it is also easily distorted, or miscommunicated.

>Being able to articulate what you do effectively not only brings tremendous benefits to your

>research and your career, but can help to shape the public perception of science. This skill is

>invaluable, which is why we’ve catered our keynote presentation by Dr. Bridgette Clarkston, as

>well as our workshops, to engage students in the art of science communication.

>This 39th edition of PEEC will be happening February 25-28, 2018 – start planning now!

>The conference fees will be $215, down (again!) from previous years thanks to our generous

>sponsors. These fees include attendance to the conference and workshops, but also

>transportation by boat from Port Alberni to Bamfield, your accommodation and all meals at the Bamfield

>Marine Science Center, AND a ticket to our West-Coast-and-Beyond famous dance party. The

>theme of this year’s party will be “Science Superheros”, let’s save the world

>together, nothing less!

>Registration opened December 4th, and will close January 15th, and can be accessed via

>our website [https://peec2018.wordpress.com. As we are limited by the facility

>capacity, registration will work on a first-come-first-served basis, so it is wiser not to wait

>on evolutionary time scales to register!

>For more information, feel free to contact us at peec2018@gmail.com or visit or

>website and social media accounts (see below).

>Ecologically and evolutionarily yours,
