Following graduation, I applied to the Sooke School District (SD62). I was hired and in the fall took over for a maternity leave with a 0.75 contract at Belmont Secondary School teaching Social Studies 10 (two classes) and ESL 11. After the teacher returned, I spent two months in the Learning Commons at as a Teacher Librarian covering for another teacher. It had felt like I had skipped a few steps in my career. However during the second semester, I again took over for a teacher, this time at Spencer Middle School. The contract was a 1.0 contract for a Grade 7 homeroom class where I taught all academic courses except for Physical Education (of course). Despite the craziness, this experience was beneficial for my flexibility within the classroom and managing students of that age group. Along with teaching, I was an assistant coach for the Royal Bay Senior Boys Basketball team during the fall and head coach of the Belmont Ultimate Frisbee team in the spring. After gaining some experience coaching and playing ultimate, I met with the Victoria Ultimate Players Society (VUPS) and was offered the first paid position with their organization as Manager of Operations and Promotions. I’m currently in the process of learning how to build and promote this sport for youth and adults. Next year I hope to have a bit more stability wherever I am teaching but either way I’m excited to see where my teaching career takes me next.
