It is crazy to think that 7 short months ago I was graduating university. I have seen such a transition in my life from being a student the last 17 years to being a teacher working in a district where at the beginning of pro year didn’t think was a possibility.  As far as my working life, I am a TOC in the Greater Victoria School District (SD61) and I really enjoy it! Being in a lot of different schools working with different kids of all ages has definitely helped me become well rounded in my teaching practices, that being said there is still so much to learn, not only about schools and students but about myself and the kind of teacher and person I can see myself becoming. What I am about to say next may sound “crazy” or I’ll call it unconventional, but I never would have anticipated not taking a contract in my teachable subjects this time last year, but that’s what I did.  I have always had a passion and a goal to try and build a business and explore different things and interests in my life aside from being a teacher. The great thing about being a TOC aside from the almost full time work it currently offers is the freedom and flexibility to explore my other interests in my life.  As far as my short to long term goals I will continue to work as a toc while trying to navigate and create opportunities to explore the other aspects of my life.  I try to see the upside in anything that I do or the decision I make.  If I fail in my short term goals I believe I have succeeded in pursuing something and seeing it through. Knowing I can bring those experiences and lessons in my life into a classroom is something that I see as a benefit to the teacher that I can become.
I wish great success to everyone in there journey through university, practicums, jobs, or any other pursuits! Please take risks and trust your feelings and instincts when figuring out what it is that will bring you happiness!
