After finishing my B.Ed. PE degree at U Vic in 2008, I moved home to Calgary, Alberta. My first teaching assignment was as a secondary Physical Education Specialist and additionally taught Grades 6 and 7 Social Studies at a middle school. Next, I was posted at Sir Winston Churchill High School to teach Physical Education, Career and Life Management, Sports Performance and Sports Medicine. It was at Winston Churchill High School, that I learned how to drive a school bus all this just so I could to transport students to the Silver Dollar Bowling Alley! During my four years at Churchill I found my niche in developing the Sports Medicine program. After my placement at Sir Winston Churchill High School, I moved to Crescent Heights High School where I taught Sports Medicine, coached junior boys’ basketball, taught grade 10 Social Studies and designed a multi grade leadership program. A year later, my mentor Sports Medicine teacher retired, and I was honoured to be assigned to his vacant position at William Aberhart High School. Currently I teach six classes of Sports Medicine, coach field hockey and run the Young Blood for Life Club.

I wish all grads and grads-to-be the best of luck wherever their career journeys take them. I have learned that, like most great endeavours in life, a teaching career is a journey, not a destination. Learning to go with flow, taking big breaths and saying, “yes” to challenges outside my comfort zone, finding mentors and always having courage, have led me to realize that teaching is rewarding and ever-changing. I am grateful for the love, lessons, and support I received from the professors and Secondary Physical Education cohort at University of Victoria.
