Ying Liu, the Humanities Librarian for Asian Studies, is leading a project of embedding Wikipedia editing in Asian Studies curriculum together with Dr. Angie Chau from the Pacific & Asian Studies department this fall.
Embedding Wikipedia editing in teaching is not a new idea and there have been rich resources including Wikipedia Education that are available online. However, there are limited Wikipedia Edit-a-thon events or curriculum design content on Asian Canadian studies and broader on Asian culture studies.
Presenting qualified content about Asian Canadian communities and relevant cultures in Wikipedia constitutes meaningful steps to support anti-racism and improve social justice in the online environment. Our project aims to contribute in this. The project outcome will include a toolkit for embedding Wikipedia editing in Asian Studies curriculum, subject guides on highlighting resources, and peer-training workshops in the library and the co-presentation on the Teaching Colloquium at the UVic Pacific & Asian Studies department.
