{"id":1052,"date":"2024-08-25T14:50:23","date_gmt":"2024-08-25T21:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/archaeograves\/?p=1052"},"modified":"2024-08-27T10:49:53","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T17:49:53","slug":"return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/archaeograves\/2024\/08\/25\/return\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaning into the Sacred- A Return to the Jewish Cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThat sounds kinda sad,\u201d My friend\u2019s mouth twisted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I had just told her that I was going to be participating in a cemetery field school. I got her reaction- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orderofthegooddeath.com\/resources\/fear-of-death\/\">death is a lot<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But sadness wasn\u2019t top of my mind in July 2023.<\/p>\n<p>I was incredibly fortunate last summer to do the Heritage and Historical Archaeology Field school in <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishcemeteryofvictoriabc.ca\/\">Victoria\u2019s historic Jewish cemetery.<\/a> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cemetery was founded in 1860. And, it\u2019s is still very much used by the community today- \u00a0So our work was about real humans- a whole community- both the living and the dead.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a privilege.<\/p>\n<p>A large part of our work was recording graves. \u00a0Documentation is super important- <a href=\"https:\/\/oldcem.bc.ca\/what-we-do\/gp\/gp_document\/\">no stone lasts forever.<\/a> But, digital records preserve the info they contain for generations to come. \u00a0It also lets us asses damage to the stones, and make <a href=\"https:\/\/oldcem.bc.ca\/what-we-do\/gp\/\">decisions around conservation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the end of our month in the cemetery, I felt connected- not only to my classmates, but to the individuals buried within the cemetery. \u00a0The rich stories from local historian, Amber Woods, \u00a0also lended colour to the lives of the deceased. So that, for a while, we may come to know them, too.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, I stay involved in the cemetery with some <a href=\"https:\/\/jewishcemeteryofvictoriabc.ca\/2024\/06\/21\/may-9-2024\/\">good o\u2019l fashioned grave cleanings.<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1055\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/archaeograves\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1174\/2024\/08\/Cleaning-Graves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1055\" class=\"wp-image-1055 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/archaeograves\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1174\/2024\/08\/Cleaning-Graves-620x476.jpg\" alt=\"Three individuals squat beside gravestones. They are wearing gloves and using brushes to clean the granite graves.\" width=\"620\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using some elbow grease to clean granite gravestones Source: jewishcemeteryofvictoriabc.ca<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/cemetery-preservation-course-cleaning-grave-markers.htm#:~:text=Only%20use%20soft%20brushes%20and,harsh%20cleaners%2C%20such%20as%20bleach.\">Scrub buckets in hand,<\/a> a team of us- community members, classmates and Dr. McGuire- get to work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishindependent.ca\/tag\/amber-woods\/\">Amber <\/a> graciously shared (amazing)<i> <\/i>baked goods before we started- a moment for the living <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chabad.org\/library\/article_cdo\/aid\/394002\/jewish\/Jewish-Cemetery-Etiquette.htm\">outside the cemetery walls.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cleaning graves is intimate- And to me, a sacred practice.<\/p>\n<p>Saying the deceased\u2019s name aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Crouching low beside the grave.<\/p>\n<p>Steadily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.funeralbasics.org\/how-to-clean-a-headstone\/\">removing layers of moss and lichen.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some graves have stuck with me- especially the children. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">I remember the first time I saw the wee grave of<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishcemeteryofvictoriabc.ca\/list-of-graves\/m\/adele-meiss\/\">Adele Meiss<\/a>, who died in 1872. Inscription reads: Adele Beloved Child of H &amp; E Meiss Died July 1st 5631 Aged 6 Months\" width=\"620\" height=\"1096\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grave of Adele Meiss, Aged 6 months<br \/>Source: jewishcemeteryofvictoria.bc.ca<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, 150 years later, in summer 2023,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjewishlearning.com\/article\/ask-the-expert-stones-on-graves\/\"> there was a stone<\/a> placed on Adele\u2019s grave- someone had visited her- probably a distant relative, the rabbi had said.<\/p>\n<p>Someone <i>remembered<\/i> her.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And now, for what it&#8217;s worth, I remember her, too.<\/p>\n<p>To spend time in a cemetery is to have the opportunity to lean in. Lean in to mortality. Lean in (ideally) to tiny acts of care- for the living <i>and<\/i> the dead.<\/p>\n<p>So, when loss struck my family this April, I think death found me&#8230;hmm&#8230; More robust than it might have?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">A smidge braver, perhaps?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>More willing to sit with it. All of it.<\/p>\n<p>Today, what I&#8217;m left with is the <strong>gratitude<\/strong>&#8211; grateful for my experiences in this sacred space, and all the humans involved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been one year since our field school in Victoria&#8217;s Historic Jewish Cemetery.
