Welcome and introductions by Glen Darling.
1. Approval of Agenda
MOTION (Russ Smith/CaroLyn Schneider) That the agenda be approved as
amended. CARRIED
2. Report on the 1998 General Election (Elections Committee)
Ludgard De Decker reported on behalf of the Elections Committee on the
recent by-election, at which Berenice Wood was elected, and on the annual
executive election at which the following were elected by acclamation:
Tom Gore (Vice-president)
Sue Corner (director)
Vincent Connor (director)
Ian Thornton (director)
MOTION (Ludgard De Decker/CaroLyn Schneider) That Kim McGowan be thanked
for his work as Chair of the Elections Committee. CARRIED
3. Approval of Minutes of the 1997 AGM
MOTION (Russ Smith/Mary O'Rourke) That the minutes of the Annual General
Meeting held November 14, 1997, be accepted as circulated. CARRIED

4. Chapter Annual Reports
4.1 President's Report

4.3 Treasurer's Report
Dick Chappell reviewed the Chapter's current financial situation. The

MOTION (Mary O'Rourke/Ann Nightingale) That the annual reports of the
President, Secretary and Treasurer be accepted as presented. CARRIED
4.4 Committee Reports
4.4.1 Provincial PEA Observer
Tom Gore reviewed the organizational structure of the PEA and the
relationships of the Chapter Executive, Bargaining Committee,
Association/University Committee, and the Provincial Executive and
subcommittees. He emphasized the need for the PEA to organize new units and
for UVic involvement at the provincial level on the Executive and
subcommittees, as well as the importance of the UVic Chapter linking with
professionals in other universities.
4.4.2 Seminars Committee
Maggie Cooper Little thanked the committee members, Jane Kovach and Angela
Katahan, and thanked Chapter members for their interest and attendance at
recent seminars. The first series address financial management and
retirement issues; the second series focused on workplace issues, such as
conflict resolution. A recent survey rated the seminars very highly and
suggested that some of them be repeated. Members are invited to offer
suggestions for future topics and speakers to the committee.
4.4.3 Performance Review Committee
Ian Thornton reported that the draft designed by the committee was posted
on the Chapter website for members' comments. A section for members with
teaching responsibilities has been added to the original document. The
final draft will also be posted on the website and will be tested early in
1999.
5. Election of 1998/99 Elections Committee
Darling read the names of those who have agreed to stand and called for
additional nominations from the floor.
MOTION (Russ Smith/Barry Smith) That Kim McGowan, Ludgard De Decker,
Norman Thom, Diane Anderson and Bindon Kinghorn be elected by acclamation
to the 1998/99 Elections Committee. CARRIED
6. Member Business
Members were reminded that a $300 bursary for part-time credit courses is
available to A&AP staff, CSIs and confidential staff through Student
Financial Aid.
7. Closing Remarks (Chapter President)
Glen Darling again emphasized the need for strengthening the Chapter and
increasing member involvement in the future. Suggestions included:
- a system of alternative local representatives;
- 1999 Provincial AGM to be held at UVic;
- sub-groups within the Chapter of members with common issues, e.g.
administrative officers, lab instructors;
- networking through coffee meetings;
- a social event for members.
