Accommodations & Transportation

NOWCAM 2025 is hosted by the University of Victoria in the charming city of Victoria on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  For thousands of years this was home to the Lekwungen peoples, the  Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ, thriving Indigenous cultures.  UVic is committed to supporting Indigenous resurgence and fostering respectful, mutually beneficial interactions.

Accomodations

If you are coming from out of town, please arrange for accommodations asap.  The only option on campus is single dorm rooms for about $80/night including taxes.

The advantage of staying on campus is that you can roll out of bed, grab breakfast in the cafeteria, and saunter to the conference in minutes.

At present, 40 rooms are available but we have held only 10 (because we will have to pay for reserved rooms that are not let). You can reserve such a room by emailing the following information to visitoraccommodation@uvic.ca :

Group: 25 NOWCAM

You will be required to pay a deposit of $80 to reserve the room. Please review the rules for staying in the dorms.

If you stay off campus, it is best to stay close to the centre of downtown. There are cheaper options on Gorge Road and north of downtown on Douglas, but some of those places are a bit dodgy and those locations are not so convenient for bus transportation.

Transportation during the conference

If you stay on campus and want to attend the CRAFT Beer Market event and/or the Gala Banquet, then you will need transportation between campus and downtown. If you stay downtown, you will need transportation to campus for the Friday 9am and Saturday 10am start times.

Parking rates on campus vary by location. Outside Ring Road and Lot E, parking costs $2.50 per hour, with a daily maximum of $10 until 11:59 pm, an evening maximum of $5 from 5:00 pm to 11:59 pm, and a Saturday maximum of $5. Inside Ring Road, evening and Saturday parking both have a $5 maximum. The HonkMobile app allows for contactless payment of daily parking and provides reminders to extend time remotely.

Bus service between UVic and downtown Victoria varies with time of day and there are fewer buses on weekends. The ride is about half an hour, longer at busy times of day. See https://www.bctransit.com/victoria/ and consider getting the UMO app so that you can plan travel and pay the $2.50 fare with your phone.
